Taiwan Season will be returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for a fifth consecutive year with some of its most memorable live performances to date. Participants in the 2018 Taiwan Season were announced on February 6, including Sun Son Theatre (身聲劇場), Our Theatre (阮劇團), Tijmur Dance Theatre (蒂摩爾古薪舞集 ), and Chang Dance Theatre (長弓舞蹈劇場).
Sun Son Theatre, Once Upon a Daydream - Bouncy, colourful, single female, employed but bored and lonely, seeks love and laughter. Welcome to a light hearted world of live action and handcrafted animation, where the line between reality and fantasy is sweetly blurred.
Chang Dance Theatre, Bon 4 Bon - Guided by Israeli choreographer Eyal Dadon, four real-life brothers take to the stage in a moving story of memories and mangos. Fresh, engaging dance by a young Taiwanese company ready to take on the world.
Our Theatre, The Delusion of Home - From southern Taiwan's Our Theatre comes a strong and original documentary style depiction of local contemporary life refracted through one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. Live performance and projections are used with skillful intelligence.
Tjimur dance Theatre, Varhung - Taiwan's premier indigenous dance-theatre company presents a richly patterned, open-hearted trio in which private feelings are on the verge of being made public. Dynamic physicality brings ancient Paiwan cultural traditions up to date.
With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan Season has introduced the very best of the island’s contemporary musicians, actors, dancers, and puppeteers to the UK festival since 2014, garnering critical praise and five-star reviews from The Guardian, The Times, The List, and other such notable media outlets.
Taiwan Season was a major hit in 2017. ‘038’, Kuo-Shin Chuang’s dynamic all-female dance performance, received a glowing write-up from Guardian dance critic Judith Mackrell. Meanwhile, ‘Together Alone’, featuring real-life couple Chen-Wei Lee and Zoltán Vakulya, also enjoyed incredible box office success, attracting notable audience members such as the French Ambassador Sylvie Bermann.
Taiwan Season is poised to take the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe by storm from the 3rd to the 27th August
