Taiwanese artist Chou-yu Cheng 周育正 will share his unique brand of Taiwan-infused creativity with the world during the July 14 to Oct. 28
The sole ethnic Chinese talent featuring in the 10th edition of the event, Chou is to be joined by 39 artists from 21 countries and territories in presenting pieces reflecting economic, political and social turmoil within the context of the British maritime mercantile city.
According to organizers, Chou “follows a practice that builds, across multiple materials, a subtle critique of mass media, institutions and the mechanisms that produce them,” adding that he expresses his intentions by emphasizing the procedures and operations behind his creations
Chou was the recipient of the Taipei Art Award, Taiwan (2012), as well as the Taishin Annual Visual Art Award, Taichung, Taiwan (2011). Recent shows include New Museum, New York, USA (2015); Asian Art Biennial, Taiwan (2015); Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taipei, Taiwan (2014); Queens Museum, New York, USA (2014) and Taipei Biennial, Taiwan (2012). Chou follows a practice that builds, across multiple materials, a subtle critique of mass media, institutions and the mechanisms that produce them. Questioning the generation of value in the art world, his works unveil strategies of exhibition-making and art production. Through conversations with companies, museums or factories, he shapes a minimal yet deliberate set of intellectual and aesthetic ‘tricks’, which ultimately play on the properties of art, object and space
