The Centre of Taiwan Studies of the London-based School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) will be launching its much anticipated second edition of the Taiwan Post-New Wave Cinema Project, which carries through its mission to raise awareness of contemporary Taiwan cinema by presenting a brand new season of director focused film series followed by live Q&A sessions from June 20 to July 2 online.
Similar to last year, the project will bring together leading film scholars to critically examine the works of some accomplished yet under-discussed filmmakers who have followed the 'auteurs' of the late 1980s such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien (侯孝賢) and Edward Yang (楊德昌).
This year's main series features an extensive collection of films from established directors Yang Ya-che (楊雅喆), Chen Yu-hsun (陳玉勳) and Chen Singing (陳芯宜), seeking to showcase the broad variety and diversity of filmmaking talent among Taiwan's Post-New Wave generation.
To celebrate a new generation of women filmmakers in Taiwan cinema, this year's edition will also dedicate a special series to Emerging Female Directors, which includes the works of four up-and-coming female directors, namely Lee Yi-shan (李宜珊), Chen Ting-ning (陳定寧), Huang Xi (黃熙) and Tung Shu-yuan (董淑緣). Through this special series, the project hopes to put a spotlight on the chroniclers of female experience, and to highlight the broad spectrum of voices that make up the vibrant cinema of Taiwan.
Director Q&A sessions and Roundtable events will be held virtually. Online screening links will be sent to those who have registered through each film's Eventbrite page. For more information on the project and Taiwan Post-New Wave Cinema, visit the Taiwan Post-New Wave Cinema Project website.
Since the establishment of the Taiwan Studies Programme in 1999, the SOAS has become one of the leading centres for Taiwan Studies in the world.
