The Atayal Weavers of Taiwan Event Held at the British Library

From 11-12 May, 'The Atayal Weavers of Taiwan' event was held at the British Library as part of the 2018 London Craft Week. At the invitation of the TRO, expert weavers Ms Shu-li Lin and Hsiu-yu Chen held demonstrations and workshops on the traditional weaving techniques of Taiwan’s Atayal aboriginal people. On both days, the workshops filled to capacity as crowds gathered to watch the weavers and use Atayal techniques to design traditionally woven bracelets of their own.

On 11 May, Deputy Representative Mr Shyang Yun-Cheng hosted a reception in which Ms Lin and Ms Chen presented Dr Luisa Elena Mengoni, Head of Asian and African Collections, with a gift entitled 'Walking Sun at the British Library.' The piece combines traditional symbols of Taiwan’s Atayal people and the British flag, integrated into the architectural design and colours of the British Library, and will be put on display to commemorate the occasion. The event attracted attention from both national and international media outlets, with Taiwan's Central News Agency and BBC's Chinese Language Service reporting on its success.
