As a general museum of fine arts, KMFA has taken introducing international art exhibitions and activities, showcasing the local development of art, and serving as a "museum for the history of art development in Taiwan" as its overriding purposes. The museum is continuously collecting major local art works. The study and analysis of local culture and art has boosted the museum's prestige and enabled it to accomplish its mission of art research, collection, exhibition, and education. KMFA is also actively managing Neiweipi Cultural Park and making efforts to develop it as a multipurpose recreational park combining artistic, cultural, ecological, and educational functions.

The third public art museum to be established in Taiwan, The main purpose of this museum is to focus on domestic perspectives and ecological aesthetics,encompassing the latest of modern thinking in areas like native history, community consciousness, and an emphasis on environmental landscaping. Artists from the south as well as indigenous artists are frequently featured, with works such as brush painting, calligraphy, watercolor, sculpture, and photo collections.
