Supported by Ministry of Culture in Taiwan, the Taipei Representative Office in the UK and Yinka Shonibare Foundation, Where I’m Coming From is a digital residency curated by _inventory Platform running from the 3rd August to the 30th August, dedicated to four migrant community languages that actively contribute to British society yet are highly invisible – Filipino, Taiwanese, Yoruba and Berber. The programme aims to create conversations about language in accessing the production and consumption of arts and culture.
Utilizing new ways of collaboration in the pandemic and post-pandemic world, the project will highlight the importance of diversity and multiculturalism in such unique times. From 17th-23rd August, Taiwanese artists Yun Ling Chen, Kuan Yu Chen and Aki Pao-Chen Chiu will be presenting their works.
Yun Ling Chen is a doctoral researcher in Fine Art at University of Reading. Her work explores the relationship between human and object through language, deconstructing the institutionalized approach to naming and untying the stable relationship between humans and objects.
Kuan Yu Chen is a dancer, choreographer and director from Taiwan, with their work being highly influenced by modern dance. The invisible marks of Pingtung will be a pre-recorded performance, inspired by the artists affection to her grandmother and childhood in Taiwan, using dance and spoken words.
Aki Pao-Chen Chiu is currently pursuing a PhD in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in London. In her two short moving image works, entitled Map and Belongings, will narrate the artist’s fragmental memories from Taiwan and their conflicting identities having moved to London.
There will also be a cooking session with chef Keegan Chen and artist Lilly Yang, with them preparing Yilian green onion cakes. This will directly engage the audience by learning about Taiwanese cuisine and being able to produce it in their own homes.
The weekly programme for the project will be shared through Guest Projects’ website (http://www.guestprojects.com/guestprojectsdigital), with daily updates on Instagram (@guestprojects) and weekly updates through Facebook (Guest Projects) and Twitter (@guestprojects). All the videos will be subtitled, with translations available and an easy read guide available each week.
